Are you suffering from a sore, stiff, or locked jaw? If so, you could have a TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder. This condition can be caused by several things, like bruxism (chronic teeth grinding), physical trauma, or even impacted wisdom teeth. Whatever the reason, you’re probably eager to address the aches so you don’t have to live with them any longer.
Fortunately, your dentist can help! They offer several services that can help alleviate your jaw pain. It’s normal to have questions about the different methods, like how long it’ll be until you’re no longer hurting. Continue reading to learn about 3 potential treatments for your TMJ issue and how quickly they can relieve your discomfort!
Option #1: Occlusal Splint
This oral appliance is custom-made to fit your teeth like a glove and is often recommended for patients who subconsciously grind their teeth, especially at night. A splint made of high-quality materials can protect your pearly whites from all the added pressure that comes with constantly clenching your jaw. It cushions them from pressing tightly together, which protects your enamel and makes you less prone to cavities and gum disease.
Furthermore, it can help reposition your jaw while you rest so that the overworked muscles have a chance to relax. It can take anywhere from six weeks to six months before you notice significant improvements.
Option #2: BOTOX
It may come as a shock to learn that the same injections used to erase fine lines and wrinkles can also be applied to alleviate your jaw aches. BOTOX is the brand name for a drug made from botulinum toxin. This chemical works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles that have been treated, which forces them to relax. When injected into your jaw, the lack of contraction gives your inflamed muscles a well-deserved reprieve so that they can heal.
Some patients experience a noticeable improvement within one or two days of their first treatment, but it can sometimes take about a week. However, the effects aren’t permanent, so you may need a repeat procedure every three to four months.
Option #3: Trigger-Point Injections
Your dentist can also inject pain medication or a corticosteroid into certain tender facial, neck, or shoulder muscles known as ‘trigger points’ for some much-needed relief. When your jaw muscles grow tight with tension, it can radiate outward into surrounding areas which can also cause headaches and other issues. Your dentist can inject drugs that start addressing your discomfort within 24 to 72 hours. You can safely anticipate that the results will last about a month before repeat injections are required.
If you’re still unsure of the best treatment for your aching jaw, the best way to decide is by scheduling a consultation with your dentist!
